Nick Basham and Tyler Johnson, two of the best tennis players Warren has seen in a while, are pushing to make a run deep into the state tournament.

“It would be nice to go to semi-state and then anything after that is nice,” Basham said.

This dynamic duo set this goal because they went to semi-state last fall as well when they had more participants on the team.

“I mean, we’d love to go to state, but I think our main goal is to get to last year's point,” Basham said.

To get better, the team has been practicing every day.

“Practice, practice, every day.  Just normal practice stuff,” Basham said.

The duo has been focusing on specific things to improve their overall performance such as their returns.

“We need to improve on our returns,” Johnson said.

Along with returns, the two have been doing other small things to perfect their skills to help with their run into the postseason.

“It’s more of the basic stuff that we need to make sure we [are] perfect for the postseason because we’ve got the skill to move on, but we just need to simplify or tweak our returns and serves and we’ll be good,” Basham said.

Along the way, there have been many people who have helped these two do big things, but there is one specific person who means the most to them.

“John, who was our assistant, now head coach who’s been there the whole time. He’s there at every practice. He knows what to say when we need him. I mean, he’s always there. Without him, we probably wouldn’t have a season, honestly,” Basham said.

Another Important part of their success is how they work together, and it has gone well so far.

“I mean, we just have chemistry from being best friends forever. We never even played doubles together, so this was our first season. So coming in now was just, ‘let's see how it goes.’ It ended up turning out fine. I mean, we haven't had any chemistry issues, so I think it fits perfectly,” Basham said.
