Skate Club is an organization for WCHS students who are interested in learning how to skate or already know-how and want to have fun with friends. The group is open to anyone who wants to skate and build a common community.
“[I joined] to learn some new tricks, connect with a few friends and explore new horizons,” sophomore Braydon Hartwell said.
The club will meet about once per month on Wednesdays in room H116 and then skate in the newly paved parking lots on the 16th street side of campus. In the cooler months, the club hopes to find a place on campus indoors.
“I'm just excited to be able to skate. Anything we do, I’m gonna be happy with,” sophomore David Kneuss said.
The group is excited to start meeting again, with a new group of kids.
“Skateboard club was very active a few years ago but kind of fizzled out after many of the kids graduated. I'm excited to start it back up again with a fresh group,” Fritts said.
The club has been around for eight years, but is gaining newfound popularity again as kids emerge from the pandemic seeking opportunities to connect with their peers in COVID-safe ways.
Although the skate club has always been important for skaters here at Warren, sponsor Tyson Fritts believes that it is especially important amid the pandemic.
“I think the skateboard club is especially important right now because of the pandemic. We are all looking for new ways to have fun and reconnect with each other and since skateboarding will be done outside, we can easily be safe about social distance,” Fritts said.
Some of Fritts’ goals for the group this year are to help students become more comfortable skating and allow them to learn some tricks.
“I can do an ollie. I wanna do all of them, any trick that man can teach me. I want him to teach me it,” said Kneuss.
So for readers who like skateboarding and are interested in finding a fun club, join the skateboard club. It helps with people who would like to learn tricks and even make friends.
