Japanese Teacher Tyson Fritts, was awarded The Association of Indiana Teacher of Japanese (AITJ)’s Teacher of the Year for 2021.

Fritts graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in Japanese language and then went on to earn his masters from Indiana University in Japanese pedagogy. He is a 15 year veteran teacher working in Warren Township. Having so much experience in teaching Japanese, the award was well deserved.

“Fritts-sensei’s students are always excited to share their discoveries about Japanese culture, and I love seeing that,” German teacher Melinda Bowman said.

Fritts prepares fun games and competitions to keep students interested and interacting with others, while having fun and learning things like the Chopstick Olympics for Japanese Club.

“He delivers information in a way that students understand and connects to their interests. He has high expectations and does not allow students to give up,” World Language department head Dave Burton said.

When Fritts initially found out that he would be recognized, he was surprised and flattered.

“I feel honored to be chosen. It highlights the great programs that we have available to the students in our district,” Fritts said.

Fritts has always been the type of teacher who is really here for the kids, always striving to do what is best for his students.

“Since I’ve known him, he has always been dedicated to doing what’s best for kids. He’s one of the best Japanese teachers in the state and his students absolutely love him,” Japanese teacher Suzanne Williams said.

Fritts’ current and former students say he is super down to earth and easy to get along with. Fritts is also a huge inspiration to most of the students he teaches and is definitely one to look up to.

“Sensei is such a down to earth and kind person. He’s inspired me even after my graduation from high school and I doubt it’ll stop there. His ability to accept others is something that I’ll always remember and appreciate. I hope he knows that he deserves the award more than anyone,“ Warren graduate Brandon Miralrio said.

His students describe him as “more than a teacher” and many were truly inspired by the way he taught and cared for them. The students say they will always remember him and that he is very deserving of his award.

“He made a safe place for me to learn without judgement. He was a kind figure in my life and is more than a teacher, he is a friend and mentor,” Warren graduate Kara Heady said.

Fritts’ work here at Warren Central is highly appreciated by the students and staff around him, and hope future students will get the chance to be just as inspired and welcomed as previous students.
